New Westwood Mall creates jobs

The development of a multimillion rand shopping mall in Westville has created temporary and permanent employment for many, including workers from nearby informal settlements. Westwood Mall, adjacent to the newly-developed Westwood Estate, will open its doors to the public on September 25. "There are more than 2000 direct employees on site at present and just over 1 000 of those people are focused on the shopping centre," said Angus Mackay, chairman of Retail Africa, at the roof-wetting ceremony held yesterday.

"About 200 of these employees are from neighbouring informal settlements. We estimate that if you include the indirect employment generated by the construction of the centre, the figure, in total, rises to 4000," he said.

Mackay said about 1 200 permanent jobs would be provided when the centre was completed. According to the Westwood Mall's general manager Ronica Inarman, about 150 stores and restaurants will occupy the three storeys.
